I remember the story. It was a pilot who was flying a jet, and there was a crack on the external window. So the air from outside was coming into the cabin. In high altitude, the pressure of oxygen is low, and the pilot was having breathing difficulties. But he managed to go back to his base and land the airplane safely.
When he was in the hospital, the doctor told him that he was a survivor. That concentration of oxygen was not sufficient to keep a man alive. And the doctor said, “How could you survive? Tell me?”
The pilot was also clueless; however, when they did a better examination and interrogation, they figured it out. That pilot was a runner, and his lung capacity was enormous. He was used to surviving on less oxygen during his exercise; therefore, he was saved because he was fit.
That is something that always impressed me that exercise can save lives. On the other hand, lack of it, or sedentariness can kill. What is the message here? If you move, you keep your circulation, your heart pumping, and your lungs functioning. If you sit, you slow your circulation, you weaken your muscles, and your lungs became sluggish. Then you gain weight, you get diabetes and hypertension and eventually die of a heart attack.
Ok, so much for dramas, we are talking about Covid 19. How can exercise help? If you move, your circulation will enhance, which means that the immune cells will be moving better to the places where they are needed. Exercise also improves stress, which is known to suppress the immune system. In addition, exercise prevents all the comorbidities that today are killing most affected by the coronavirus infection.
We could write a whole book on exercise benefits here. Like if you exercise, you improve your sleep. Well, during sleep, your body produces more lymphocytes and natural killer cells – the same ones that will fight the covid 19 viruses. If you exercise outdoors, you clean your lungs and then have a lower risk of infections, and finally, if you exercise, you increase the circulation to the skin and mucosa, bringing more immune cells there. The mucosa is the first line of defense against viruses and other microorganisms. If that line is working correctly, you will have less chance to get infected.
Finally, exercise will provide perfect circulation. People who have a lung infection have more congestion of fluids on internal organs and coldness in the extremities with less flow there. Exercise fixes and redistributes the blood.
Now that you know all of this, why don’t you stop whatever you are doing and go for a walk? Now it is time to exercise! Now it is time to spend more time outdoors! Now it is time to work in your garden! Now it is time to go hiking or walking in the forest! And now it is time to play with your children and do exercise with your family!
Please, move!
